Mackay Hospital and Health Service offers a comprehensive Nursing and Midwifery Graduate Program. Our program is designed to facilitate your transition as a newly registered nurse or midwife into your first year of practice.

We offer graduates a supportive 12-month temporary placement that will help you reach your full potential and provide exciting and rewarding career opportunities.

Mackay Hospital and Health Service offers placements at Mackay Base Hospital and across our rural facilities.

You will learn new practical skills and further develop theoretical knowledge. Throughout the program you will be assigned study days to support ongoing professional development.

Graduate program for registered nurses

We offer a 12-month temporary placement for graduate nurses. Intakes commence December through to March.

You can do a 12-month placement at Mackay Base Hospital or a rural facility. The temporary placement is for 64 – 76 hours per fortnight (0.8 -1.0 FTE).

Mackay Base Hospital

Registered nurse graduates will have the opportunity to work across one clinical specialty at Mackay Base Hospital. There may be scope for some graduates to experience two rotations within Mackay Base Hospital, this will be determined by organisational need or specific individual circumstances. Placements are offered in the following clinical areas of Mackay Base Hospital:

  • Acute Assessment Stroke Medical Unit
  • Child and Adolescent Unit
  • Coronary Care Unit
  • Coronary Catheter Laboratory
  • Extended Day Surgery Unit
  • Emergency Department
  • General Surgical Unit G1
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Medical Unit F2
  • Medical Unit G2
  • Mental Health Inpatient Unit
  • Oncology
  • Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Unit F0
  • Peri-operative (surgical theatre)
  • Renal Unit
  • Specialist Outpatients Department
Rural hospitals and health services

Opportunities to experience and grow within the rural sector are offered at some of our rural locations, including:

Graduate program for registered midwives

We offer a 12-month temporary placement for registered graduate midwives at Mackay Base Hospital. Intakes commence December through to March.

The temporary placement is for 64 hours per fortnight (0.8 -1.0 FTE). The placement is done on a rotation basis through Maternity Services in the following areas:

  • Antenatal clinic
  • Birth suite
  • Postnatal ward
  • Special Care Nursery
  • Midwifery Group Practice model of care

Applications for the 2024 Queensland Health Nursing and Midwifery Program opens in July and closes in August.

The recruitment process can take between 2 to 3 months and if you don’t complete all the necessary paperwork, this can cause delays for you. Please ensure you read what information and documentation you will need to complete your application. You can find out more about eligibility and how to apply on the Queensland Health website.

Interviews will be conducted in late August to September. Conditional offer of positions will commence in October. Placements are appointed through intakes commencing December to March.  Orientation will coincide with your start date.

Applications are welcome from all university graduates across Australia, even if you haven’t done a placement with us.
